Gov. Corzine says Christie, Rove talks cast doubt on tenure of former U.S. Attorney

TRENTON -- Gov. Jon Corzine said today that reported conversations between Republican candidate Chris Christie and former Bush strategist Karl Rove cast doubt on Christie's decisions at the helm of the U.S. Attorney's office.

"I'm under the impression that U.S. attorneys are supposed to be free of politics," the Democratic governor told reporters after an event in Newark this morning, adding that Rove's "whole role in the White House was about politics."
...
Congressional documents released Tuesday revealed that Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie, who served as U.S. Attorney until December, had discussions with Rove about running for governor. It is unclear exactly when they took place, but Rove told lawmakers in Washington that he spoke with Christie "twice in the last couple of years, perhaps one time while I was at the White House and once or twice since I left" about his interest in running for governor, according to hearing transcripts.

First off, anyone in Cranbury who supports Corzine really needs to look in the mirror and have a conversation with themselves on why they moved here. He wants to get rid of Cranbury by consolidating us with othert towns, he wants to change our school district- remember why the BOE had the meeting last year to discuss the revuew, he is leading the charge on COAH. He's the one telling Roberts he wants this done and make it happen.

Then once that discussion is done ask why all the corruption has not stopped? Could Corzine have been looking the other way considering all except one person had ties to Corzine's party? Ask why all Corzine can do is cite Bush and Bush colleage names? If Rove did ask Christie if he was thinking what is wrong with that?

Look how Corzine abandoned his senate seat without completing one term. I am not a Republican, but I am voting for Christie because I think Corzine has done his best to destroy NJ and with no fear of running again in 2013, we will see COAH and consolidation come back in full force with our town suffering.

Aren't reporters supposed to be "non-political", too?

Why bother to print this non-story?

This is non-sense.

Not anymore when they are trying to sell papers and appeal to interest groups.

Corzine presses exchanges between Christie and Rove

The Corzine campaign yesterday took its offensive on Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie's reported conversations with former president George W. Bush's political adviser Karl Rove a step further by alleging those exchanges -- as well as other meetings he took while U.S. attorney -- appear to have violated federal law.

"The Hatch Act is very clear in saying political activities are off limits,'' Gov. Jon Corzine said after a bill signing in New Brunswick. "It is very hard to understand how someone who is responsible and mission is law enforcement should be violating -- potentially violating -- laws like the Hatch Act."

During his years as a federal prosecutor, Christie, a former Morris County freeholder, attracted buzz from GOP leaders as a potential future candidate for governor. Christie downplayed the speculation and maintained he was focused on the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The Christie campaign has said there was nothing wrong with conversations he had with Rove and said yesterday the Corzine's Hatch Act allegations only served as a diversion from the governor's record.

Citing a string of media reports, the Corzine campaign contends Christie met with former Republican National Committee Chairman Rich Bond during his tenure in 2004, as well as Somerset County GOP Chair Dale Florio and former Sussex GOP Chair Rich Zeoli. More recently, in 2008, they say he spoke with state Sen. Jennifer Beck (R-Monmouth) about possibly becoming his lieutenant governor candidate, as well as Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson, now Christie's campaign co-chair. Christie left the U.S. Attorney's Office in December.

"It's now clear that Christie was laying the groundwork for his gubernatorial campaign while he was serving in the U.S. Attorney's office," said state Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), Corzine's running mate. "His phone calls with Karl Rove and meetings with high profile Republicans to plot his run for governor appear to directly violate the Hatch Act."

Christie campaign spokeswoman Maria Comella, said Corzine should be focused instead on the recently reported mismanagement, fraud and abuse at the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor. "Jon Corzine's doing what he does best, and that's engaging in misleading attacks," she said.

Comella said Corzine should explain the millions of taxpayer dollars misspent at the Waterfront Commission where New York Inspector General Joseph Fisch declared a "total agency breakdown" in a recent report.

"If millions in taxpayer dollars were abused for years without detection, where else are taxpayer dollars being misused?" Comella said. "How can we trust that taxpayer dollars are not being wasted across the board while Jon Corzine continues to raise taxes and turn a blind eye to the problem?"

The Hatch Act restricts political activity by federal employees according to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel in Washington.

Speaking generally, Erica Hamrick, deputy chief of OSC's Hatch Act Unit, said "any act in furtherance of candidacy," for an elected office, such as creating a website or holding meetings to organize a campaign, would be a violation.

But Hamrick said determination of a violation is very "fact-specific." In Christie's case, for example, it would depend on exactly what was said in meetings.

Transcripts from closed-door congressional hearings released early this week showed Christie spoke with Republican strategist Rove about a potential run for governor.

Staff writer Susan K. Livio contributed to this report.

This is why journalism is going down hill. They fail to research what is being said or to ask follow up questions as to what makes Corzine feel he violated the act. Which by the way when you read the articles of the act is not as big a deal as Corzine would have one think. Which is 1) not surprising and 2) Shows how good Christie really is if this is all Johnny Convict uh Corzine has.

Permitted/Prohibited Activities for Employees Who May Not Participate in Partisan Political Activity

These federal employees may-

- register and vote as they choose
-assist in voter registration drives
-express opinions about candidates and issues
-participate in campaigns where none of the candidates represent a political party
-contribute money to political organizations or attend political fund raising functions
-attend political rallies and meetings - HELLO THIS IS WHERE ROVE FITS LIKELY
-join political clubs or parties
sign nominating petitions
-campaign for or against referendum questions, constitutional
-amendments, municipal ordinances

These federal employees may not-
- be candidates for public office in partisan elections
- campaign for or against a candidate or slate of candidates in partisan elections
- make campaign speeches
- collect contributions or sell tickets to political fund raising functions
- distribute campaign material in partisan elections
- organize or manage political rallies or meetings
- hold office in political clubs or parties
- circulate nominating petitions
- work to register voters for one party only
- wear political buttons at work

So based on the above, why didn't the journalist ask how JC believed the act was violated? One of two reasons because either the reporter was lazy or wants to be partial to JC
