Burglaries prompt meeting

Deadbolts on house doors, motion detector lighting outside and state-of-the-art alarms are ways residents can beef up security on their homes, Cranbury police officers say.

But the best safety measure, they say, is a watchful eye.
"A good neighbor is worth its weight in gold," Capt. Ed Kahler said Thursday. "The most important thing is for them to call us when they see something suspicious."

To address concerns about several residential burglaries that have occurred in town this year — the most recent one at a Maplewood home on July 31 — Capt. Kahler met with the Mothers' Club at the Cranbury Inn on Wednesday.

According to police reports given to The Cranbury Press, there have been seven burglaries since January — a North Main Street home in January, a house in the Cranbury Green development in February, and in May, houses on Peddie Road, North Main Street, Cranbury Neck Road and in the Cranbury Green development.

Capt. Kahler spent the evening discussing home security tips and personal safety.

"They wanted to know what they could do as far as protecting their homes with better locks and alarms, what are some of the trends, how do burglars get in, and how we can prevent them from getting in," Capt. Kahler said.
