New Jersey motorists will face steeper fines if they don't stop for pedestrians, beginning April 1. An updated law requires motorists to stop and remain stopped for pedestrians in a crosswalk. Currently, the law only requires that motorists yield or slow for pedestrians. http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/03/new_jersey_motorists_will_face.html |

Sounds good, but it may be a bad omen that the law begins on April Fool's Day. |

About time. Until we moved to the NJ/NY area everywhere we lived took pedestrian right-of-way very seriously and rigorously enforced it. Back here it seems like a free-for-all.
Now they just need to start training people how to properly pull over when an emergency vehicle with flashing lights is going by. I have almost been read ended twice because I slowed and pulled to the side but the driver behind me thought it appropriate to blaze right on by. |

Whose going to enforce it. The cop crossing school kids or the cop answering calls in the township. Maybe the crossing guards can help. |

Sadly with all of the cutbacks one of things that we will have to come
to terms with is that it will not be possible to enforce and prosecute many traffic violations such as speeding on Main Street and crosswalk violators. Perhaps the emphasis should be on pedestrians being more vigilant. |

Sorry, but, New Jersians drive like THEY own the road. I have seen so many morons who would rather ram into you full speed than slow down a few MPHs.
They speed up, and hold their hamfists on the horn until they blow past you doing 90!
Don't expect any miracles. |
