On Saturday, June 16, Optimal Exercise in Cranbury will host an open house to demonstrate the various exercises involved in sports conditioning programs. Athletes and their parents will be able to try agility drills, plyometrics, interval training, and strength training exercises, as well as ask questions of the staff about conditioning in general.
“Sports conditioning combines the cardio and weight training exercise you would do to ‘get in shape’ with more movement-oriented activities like footwork drills, jumps and landings, and running in different directions,” says Bill DeSimone, owner/director of Optimal Exercise. “These ‘sports-general’ activities are sort of ‘pre-practice’. By mastering these movements in the off-season, you may be better able to do what your coach asks for during your specific sports practice.”
Optimal Exercise, with its program, is going to emphasize teaching the fundamentals first, and then progressing the athlete, in a non-competitive setting. High school athletes in sports such as soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, volleyball, cheerleading, (i.e. all the sports in addition to football and basketball) would benefit, as well as younger athletes and recreational adult athletes. All participants would get a foundation of movement skills and conditioning that can help them in the sport of their choice.
“Nobody can, or should, guarantee stardom or completely avoiding injuries,” says DeSimone. “But you can at least address the physical attributes that can help.”

The open house will be from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 16, at the Optimal Exercise studio on 27 B Maplewood Avenue in Cranbury. The studio is two blocks from Main Street in Cranbury, and is easily accessible from Plainsboro Road and Route 130. From Monroe, Cranbury-Half Acre Road crosses over 130, leading you right to Maplewood Avenue.
Guests will be able to observe and try the equipment and exercises. These include Olympic weights, with a special, lighter training bar; agility ladder; mini-hurdles; cone and ring drills; box jumps; upper body exercise ergometer; slide board; Nautilus machines; and more. Information on training packages will be made available for anyone interested in more specific instruction.
