Home Depot was hacked and credit/debit card data was stolen. If you had used a payment card at a Home Depot store after April 1, 2014, you can sign up for a FREE Credit monitoring on this page:

Thanks for the info.

I just went through the process. Here are the details:

1. Once you provide your name and email address, you will receive an email with a redemption code for the "AllClear PRO service" for 1 year free of charge.

2. You will need to enter the redemption code and various info (name, address, SSN, DoB, phone, etc.) using the link below to sign up for AllClear ID protection.

Also, you will create an account with AllClear-ID using the email and password entered using the above link.

3. A confirmation email will arrive in your email box.

4. You will need to log in to your AllClear-ID account to set up a PIN.

Home Depot says 56 mln card details likely stolen in breach

Sept 18 (Reuters) - Home improvement retailer Home Depot Inc said 56 million card details were likely stolen in a data breach between April and September at its stores in the United States and Canada.

Criminals used unique, custom-built malware to evade detection in the breach, the company said.

Home Depot's payment security systems had been breached and customers' details who shopped at its stores as far back as April were exposed, the company confirmed last week.

The malware has been eliminated from its U.S. and Canadian networks, the company said.

Well, it does not help. I just found out that my Fidelity AmEx card data was used to purchase stuff online at Apple store without my knowledge; the charges totaled more than $3,000.

If you had purchased stuff from Home Depot using credit cards, it's a good idea to check the transactions posted on your accounts often, especially during the upcoming shopping season.

Not defending here, but it's not THAT type of credit monitoring. They are monitoring for new accounts opened in your name, changes to your address, etc. They don't have access to individual charges made on your CC. It's up to you CC company to detect fraudulent charges (which doesn't seem to work very well).

Right. Thanks for the info.

AmEx did void my card and prompted me to call an 800 number when I tried to access my account.

Good to know that I don't need to pay for those fraudulent charges. I'll get a new card soon. Wink

This is a surprise to me. I am going to buy an iPhone 6+ soon and try the Apple Pay. I don't trust retailers that store my credit card info in their system anymore.

FYI.

Got the fraudulent charges from AmEx.

10/19/2014, APPLE STORE 261 YONKERS NY (went through)
10/20/2014, APPLE STORE 21 CAMBRIDGE MA (went through)
10/20/2014, APPLE STORE 21 CAMBRIDGE MA (blocked)

I still have the AmEx card used by the thief; apparently, the thief got my card info from the Home Depot hack (I did not use this card at Target, which was also hacked).

Wow! This is scary: imagine that thieves using your credit card to purchase stuff while the exact card is in your wallet! Now, if the thieves are smart and use the card in NJ/Cranbury (where the card holder resides), then it would be tough to detect (and to dispute).
