Many years ago, a group of republicans, libertarians and others formed the tea party, which evolved into a secretive fringe group bent on resisting the president. Moderate republicans left the group and fortunately, Cranbury was more or less immune to the toxic national political environment.

Today, a group of democrats, socialists and others have formed "Indivisible", a secretive fringe group bent on resisting the president. Indivisible's own board members described themselves as analogous to the Tea Party according to CNN. In other words, Indivisible is the new Tea Party.

While this type of radical political activism may be warranted to get traction at a national or state level, at a local level it has shown to be politically irrelevant and downright divisive.

Lets hope Cranbury can again rise above the toxic national political scene. Democrats in Cranbury have a choice tomorrow, vote for the democratic version of the tea party, or choose a candidate who has kept national politics out of Cranbury and dedicated nearly a decade to making our town a wonderful, safe, welcoming place for all residents.

I am in complete agreement. I cannot believe the level of anger and vitriol this group has unleashed on the town. The backstabbing, the rumors. These are not nameless, faceless politicians you are trashing. They are your neighbors. Their children go to school with your children.

I admit, I am worried. This is not the town I moved to many years ago and chose to make my home and raise my family. Incredibly disheartening to think there is a possibility that this will become the new normal.

I would also like to point out that if you are an unaffiliated voter you can also vote in tomorrow's primary!

Hoping cooler heads will prevail!

No. You must be a registered Democrat or Unaffiliated to vote in the primary. Also know that if you are Unaffiliated and you vote in a democratic primary, you will automatically become registered as a Democrat, but if you wish to retain your Unaffiliated status you would just have to update your voter registration, which can be done online.

What a load of revisionist crap. Mulligan and Taylor were both part of the teapary republican party. Taylor left the republicans because the teaparty republican were going to primary him out because he would not go along with some of their fiscal outrageous right wing ideology. For all practical purposes when Mulligan and Tylor vote against the civil right commission they are showing their tea parry roots and continuing connection.
Folks the cranbury republican party does not denounce the racist in chief that is the head of their party. Regardless of what happens in the primary, wayne Wittman has a outrageous retrograde record that he ran on in 2011 and once people in Cranbury find out about it, they will all be in support of a civil right commission and the teaparty flags that flew next to Witt’s campaign signs during the last election have now disappeared – once that situation was pointed out on this blog

I'm confused, how is this a bad thing and how does it reflect negatively on Jay Taylor? He has no tea party roots, by your own words he left the republican party because he would not go along with their ideology.

It seems like the point you're trying to make is drawing even more parallels between the Tea Party and Indefensible/Indivisible, both of which are too radical for Mr. Taylor. You are essentially accusing Jay Taylor of being a political moderate with a lot of integrity.

Would you care for a shovel?

PostPosted: Mon, Jun 4 2018, 2:28 pm EDT    Post subject: Nonsense: Indivisible = Tea Party Reply with quote

Just a couple points:

1. Indivisible is, generally, quite LOUD, not secretive.

Indivisible is a GUIDE that was published by ex- Congressional staffers, outlining the tactics and strategies (i.e. start LOCAL and then move onto the county and state) used by the Tea Party, albeit secretly, I do believe, in THEIR case, to rise in political power and they were VERY successful. They currently hold some of the highest offices in our land. (Mike Pence was the Koch bro's, see below, choice for POTUS. Gave him lots of $$) The Guide has been talked about on many media outlets (minus the uber right) since the Presidential election. It has been heralded and shared and advertised since it's inception 18 months ago. Quiet; it is not.

2. Both the TP and Indivisible ARE grassroots, though not funded the same. The Tea Party "took off" when the Kochs', et al started running things, and Indivisible "took off" with the Womens' March.

The Tea Party was not exactly the "brainchild" of the Kochs' and their rich posse, but once discovered, the brothers jumped in and spent millions on promoting and funding this movement of the far right party, which is why it became such a successful and invasive group. The donors are, generally, billionaires and are intent on securing corporate rights over human and environmental rights. SecEd Devos is one of these billionaires. Though, surely, the Indivisible movement in its many facets has received plenty of money from the uber rich, it really is being paid for and organized at the grassroots level. The book "Dark Money" highlights this quite well. It's very frightening.

3. The Resistance is made up of more than one group. You will see on the site, www.indivisibleguide.com, well over 6000 groups, last time I checked (a year?) that have signed on as "resistance" groups so that like-minded, local people could join together. "Some" choose to call themselves Indivisible something, like Cranbury did. Others called themselves SOMA Action, District 4 Coalition for Change, Rise and Resist, Rise up NC, Midterm Turn Around, Equal etc.... Some groups, like OurRevolution, Moms Demand Action, the New Jim Crow and others, existed well before Mr. Trump entered the scene. Of course, many of these groups formed with the sole purpose of creating a network of the groups everywhere so the resistance is organized by county, district, and state with all, now, in communication. It's pretty darn impressive.

4. The Tea Party is comprised, almost exclusively, by white, males. The Resistance movement, almost exclusively, by women, hence the organization mentioned above; the majority of whom have never been politically active before. The mothers, and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters, medical professionals, teachers etc. are leading the way. And they've got social media down pat, cause there's so much involvement by the young. It's pretty impressive.

5. The TP's original major focus, as I understand it, was on reduction of debt, taxes, and spending but, with the addition of all that billionaire money, came to include a focused effort towards disengaging all gov't regulation that got in the way of corporate profit. Scott Pruitt, the corporate tax giveaway, and the reduction in human rights are examples of their success in power. The original TP members, fighting for the reductions noted above, have been played.

The "Resistance Movement" is comprised of those who are rising up against this current administration in support of HUMAN rights, across the board. Environmental rights are equally important to this group.

6. Unfortunately, Cranbury can not remain unfazed during this tumultuous national time. The MeToo movement, the increase in deaths of black youth, the reality of the school to prison pipeline, the endless school shootings, the concerns about healthcare and college and employment are here too. And don't forget about Mother Earth. Leaving clean air and water to our children is a great concern we all must surely share.

7. Change is inevitable; of course, it's never easy. (an aside: Mayor Glenn Johnson might want to consider an apology for his last council meeting address. His attempt at humor belies his lack of understanding, I believe, but many see it as an outright, intentionally misogynistic slant. The women are not happy about this.)

8. If you think these progressive groups are TOO left, perhaps you are correct. However, many see that things are being controlled nationally by the FAR TOO RIGHT and it is a natural response. Check out Newton's Third Law, re equal and opposite reactions. If more moderate/conservative dems and moderate repubs joined in, spoke up against the atrocities of this administration, declared and worked towards equal rights for all, and sought to restore balance things might be different.

I love this town, but, like everywhere, we, too, must change and grow.

Thank you for listening. Have a pleasant day.

I understand that you feel Indivisible is virtuous and Tea Party is not. The point is, both are wrapped up in a national political agenda that really has no real place in our local politics. The Cranbury Township Committee is not going to tackle those national political issues. The most you could do locally to drive the national ultra-progressive agenda would be to make Cranbury a "Sanctuary Township", increase our affordable housing obligations, disarm the police and cancel our sending relationship with Princeton, none of which are likely to be super-popular ideas. Think about it... people are mad about Trump, so their solution is to vote out Jay Taylor? When you say it out loud, doesn't it sound a little silly?

Tomorrow, we have a choice between A) a person who has dedicated thousands of hours to help successfully run the township for almost a decade, or B) writing in a person with no experience who has until very recently shown no interest. Are you really going to pick option B because you're upset about something completely unrelated?

I agree with you that there are many important issues to tackle and I hope the people of Indivisible Cranbury focus on tackling those issues in a meaningful way. But hatching a secret strategy to take out Jay Taylor is not going to address any of the issues you mentioned and that is Indivisible Cranbury's #1 priority at the moment. Like the local Tea Party, it seems like our local Indivisible chapter has become bogged down in personal vendettas and misplaced anger. Hopefully the fog will clear and people will make the best decision for Cranbury tomorrow.

I don't believe the local Indivisible has any intention of pushing for those issues you mentioned. My understanding is they are currently focused largely on mid-terms, registering voters, getting rid of corruption in government, and environmental issues. Some are also involved in a Central Jersey Justice Coalition. Some are involved in the NJ State legislation happenings.

My (very long prior missive) intended to address the "TP = Indivisible" comment, but did not speak of the Town Council race. For your information, my decision on who to vote for remains, at present, undecided.

I believe there is a feeling "by marginalized communities" of being "marginalized" in this town. I have never seen anything remotely racist or sexist in my many years as a resident, but I do know that the experiences of these communities are real. White Privilege often prevents us from entertaining a different narrative than our own. I can't help but think of the Muslim woman who was called a "terrorist" at a recent town committee meeting by a Town Board member. THAT is dangerous, and can not be allowed. I do hope the Town Council has loudly denounced this horrifically immature, and small minded barb, though I have not heard that they have.

We may not be facing, right here, right now, the worst of the Trumpian horrors, but if we don't stand up and say who we are as a community -an inclusive, tolerant, supportive town who STANDS for human rights - - we, by default, aren't.

May the best men win tomorrow.

You say they have no desire to push those issues mentioned. However, they are pushing for a Civil Rights Commission. They are challenging the one TC member who is up in Jay Taylor who voted against that desire. Ignoring all his other time serving.

Where I come from if it acts like a duck and it quacks like a duck then it's a duck. There is no proof they would push for those items, but it certainly seems they are not leaving these issues alone either and have a very firm goal of instilling policy and directing policy at the local level.
