I heard that SONY will introduce a cheaper version of PS3 in November for $399. And there is a mail-in for 5 free Blu-Ray movies! I plan to buy one when it is available. I have a Wii now. If you have a PS3, can you share your experience with me? Thanks!

I think SONY is making the right move here. A $399 PS3 with Blu-Ray will be a very good value. If you cannot find your favorite PS3 games to play on it, you can always do what this astrophysicist did: replacing Supercomputer with Eight PlayStation 3s! Laughing

This will definitely be a good choice for a lot of people. Worth noting, though, that this new entry level model drops all backward compatibility with the PS2, so you won't be able to play older games with it. That leaves you with a very small game library to chose from right now. But just $400 is a good price for a Blue Ray player even if you discount the current game platform for now...

It also drops some other previous features, like 2 of the UPS ports (no big deal) and the card reader. That may be a bigger deal. Their free Playstation Network is notoriously slow and buggy. I have a PS3 and when they did the recently software revision to 1.93 (which they require you to do in order to do any online activity), it totally failed to work online for many people. Our only choice was to download the update on our PC and export it to a card that we then used to import into the PS3. Without a card reader, I would have been stuck off-line indefinitely or forced to send my unit into Sony (average time away is 6 weeks) to get the update...

Thanks for the info!

The PS1 and PS2 compatibility issue is not so important for me I think. I am a newbie on games and have never played PS1 or PS2 games. I intend to use PS3 as a Blu-Ray player and play a couple of popular games like Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Ratchet & Clank Future.

If I can get on to the Internet using PS3 via WiFi, I'll be able to download files from SONY. Of cause, if the software update disables the Internet access, then a media card will be very helpful.

Rachet & Clank will be incredible, especially for kids, of which there are few good games on the PS3 so far. We have the demo and love it...

The built-in Wi-Fi in the PS3 is very weak, BTW. Even my IPhone gets better signal strength from the same place. And be advised if you had expected to house your PS3 in an AV cabinet or shelf, don't. Unlike the XBox 360 which had a major recall due to overheating failures, the PS3 doesn't overheat, but only because it has a huge internal fan that sounds like a hair dryer (literally) after a while when used in a cabinet. We had to re-think our whole setup to place it out in the open with plenty of space on each side clear in order to keep the fan in check and get the Wi-Fi to work reliably. And that was the second unit after returning the first...

Still, its a great machine and the Blue Ray looks really good.

SCEA confirms 40GB PlayStation 3 SKU

To coincide with a price cut for the 80GB unit.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has finally confirmed the new 40GB PlayStation 3 for the US, and plans to release it on November 2 for USD 400.

The move follows hot on the heels of GamesIndustry's report on the situation earlier in the week, and will coincide with a 17 per cent price cut for the existing 80GB unit, which drops from USD 600 down to USD 500.
