A topic was discussed about maintaining our own court and the Committiee responds that it is not financially beneficial to do so. But the committee has never provided any documentation to support their claim. How can much smaller towns find it beneficial to maintain a court?

The town over the years has provided the data as it's looked at every couple of years.

The town has no court facility so the building would need to be built, staffed, etc...The revenue is not there to make it work because:

If a Title 39 traffic ticket (like speeding, using a cell phone while driving or driving without a license, among many potential offenses) is written by a state trooper, 100 percent of the fine goes to the state treasury. So there is no money from the Turnpike.

If a municipal officer writes a Title 39 traffic ticket, the fine is split half-and-half by the municipality and the county.

Fines for certain traffic offenses, like inspection violations, needed repairs, and outdated inspection stickers, go 100 percent to the state treasury no matter who writes the ticket.

So if there was an existing court, then potentially it makes sense. However, in Cranbury it does not and the TC has explained every so often why that is the case.

Maybe you can be so kind and provide the data that was reported because I’ve never seen statistics in all the years I’ve been attending meetings. I’ve heard talk but no actually numbers.

I don’t have them. I know it was discussed at one affordable housing meeting and at the TC debate a few years back.

Email a TC member and you can get it easily enough.
