Mayor's Update - April 11, 2023

Dear Cranbury Residents,

Spring has finally sprung. My favorite “sign of spring” is the bright yellow forsythia, and they were in full bloom this weekend.

At last night’s Township Committee meeting, we approved an ordinance to streamline the process to get food trucks at township events and conform to new NJ regulations. Look for food trucks at the May 7 Millstone Park 1713 House events and other events throughout the year. We also received an update from the Parks Commission --- thank you to Sally O’Grady and the entire Parks and DPW teams for keeping our parks attractive and well-used. Look for the new half-mile walking path in Village Park by summer.

Cranbury: A 2022 Healthy Town Up-and-Coming! Cranbury Township received a “Healthy Town Up-and-Coming” designation for the second year in a row by the Princeton-based Quality Institute. The Township's collaboration with its Municipal Alliance Committee results in mental health awareness activities for residents, as well as a focus on substance use disorder prevention. It is a great distinction and further proof of Cranbury's commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle. Our tight-knit community prioritizes open space and parks for us to relax and enjoy, as well as community events that bring us together. The Mayors Wellness Committee worked diligently to develop meaningful programs with lasting impact, and we are looking forward to continuing those efforts. Thanks to all who supported these efforts!

SUMMER RECREATION CAMP: Now is the time to think about fun summer activities for the young ones. Due to the school construction, there will not be Arts Council Camp this summer, but the Summer Recreation Camp will be happening June 26 through August 11! Three camps available for all ages, with pool visits and amazing field trips weekly.

SCHOLARSHIP and AWARD DEADLINES: Cranbury Lions is offering several awards (deadline April 14). Women's Club high school senior and woman returning to school after some time away and pursuing post-secondary education (deadline April 30). Cranbury P.B.A. 405 Scholarship for Princeton High School Seniors (May 1).

Check out these upcoming events:

Saturday, April 15 – Princeton High School Jazz Festival. This year’s theme is Celebrating Frank Sinatra. 1:30 p.m.

The Sons of the American Revolution and BSA Troop 52 will open the celebration with the presentation of colors. Colonial music, food vendors, Colonial games, re-enactors, demonstrations, and several local shoppes will be there! Come for the community celebration and see how far the renovation of the 1713 East Jersey Cottage has come since being moved to Millstone Park in the Fall of 2019.

June 3 – The 30th Annual Health and Wellness Fair. Sponsored by the Municipal Alliance, this fun event will feature new activities and some classics, including Cranbury Brook Preserve hikes and a Colorful Fun Run. Any reason Gil&Berts is staying open well past 10pm on a Sunday night when township ordinance requires them to close at 9:30?

Probably to serve the people that were waiting in the line. Never enough for some people. There’s too many businesses. Then there’s not enough. Then we don’t like this business or we don’t want that business. Now the business are open too late.

There is a zoning law regarding hours. It isn’t personal opinion it is adhering to the agreement with the town. Years ago the prior owners were fined for being open past 9.

Wonder how they feel about neighbors and residence having loud parties past the Township Noise Ordinance hours. I guess everyone this summer should be getting fines.

My neighbors have parties several weekend nights a month during the summer. I have no problem with that. If they did it every night from April through October it would be a problem.

When a business opens and has to do so via zoning or planning they sign an agreement with the town. By law Gil and Bert’s is supposed to be closing at 9 as that is in their agreement. Years ago Chris the prior owner fought the town on this and brought people in. But was told it had to be 9 because that is what she agreed to when approved to convert the home into a business. The new owner should be fined the same way Chris was.
