Regulations mean HPAC will be replaced by a new Historic Preservation Commission.
The township is hoping the elimination of its Historic Preservation Advisory Committee and the establishment of a new Historic Preservation Commission will take the guesswork out of development, remodeling and renovation projects for residents in Cranbury's Historic District.
The Township Committee introduced an ordinance Monday that members of the Historic Preservation Subcommittee said would establish clearer guidelines for development and improvements to structures in the district.
The ordinance also creates the Historic Preservation Commission. The commission would replace the HPAC and, according to the ordinance, would have the authority to change the size and shape of the Historic District.
The current district encompasses about 800 houses along North Main and South Main streets from Plainsboro Road to Old Trenton Road, including houses on Symmes Court, Maplewood Avenue, Park Place, Bunker Hill Road and Station Road, and also includes a buffer zone stretching 2,400 feet beyond the zone's boundary.
