Local public discuss reasons for votes

While Democrat U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez won the New Jersey vote, the majority of Cranbury voters supported his opponent, Republican state Sen. Thomas Kean Jr.

Of the township's 2,486 registered voters, 1,495 cast their vote Tuesday. Of that, 733 backed Mr. Kean, while 692 supported Mr. Menendez.

However, Cranbury residents favored Democrat incumbent Rush Holt for the U.S. House of Representatives over Republican challenger Joseph Sinagra, casting 910 votes for Mr. Holt, and 513 for Mr. Sinagra.

It was a closer race in Cranbury for seats on the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Township voters backed Democrat incumbents James Polos and John Pulomena, casting 725 for Mr. Polos and 711 for Mr. Pulomena.

Their Republican challengers, Geoffrey Champion and Andrew Tidd, received 626 and 610 votes respectively.
A number of those who said they voted for Sen. Kean said they did not trust Sen. Menendez and that Sen. Kean was the lesser of two evils.
