Premiums vary, but some cars are clear winners in cutting your insurance costs. Here are the top 2004 models, and a way to look up your own car's ratings.

All stories about which vehicles cost the least to insure -- including this one -- should come with a warning label: Your mileage may vary.

That's because how much you pay for insurance depends on so many factors, from where you live to how you drive to whether you pay your bills on time. (For more information on this last factor, see "How bad credit costs you with insurers.")

How much you paid for your car also has a powerful effect on your premiums. A luxury car with all the latest safety features still typically costs more than a no-frills econobox, because the higher-priced car may be more expensive to repair, for example, or more likely to get swiped.
