Pet-adoption event coming to Cranbury

In an effort to help raise funds and awareness for local pet-rescue organizations and find permanent homes for New Jerseyarea dogs and cats, the third annual Purina Pro Plan Rally Across America tour will make a stop at the sixth annual Because Your Dog Is Worth It Too Day set for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 15 at 35 Broadway Road, Cranbury.

The tour will help the Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue campaign get closer to its goal of securing loving homes for 300,000 animals across the country by the end of 2009. Since the program's inception in 2005, Rally to Rescue and its ambassadors have successfully found homes for more than 225,000 animals.

Residents will have the opportunity to learn more about pet rescue and to adopt dogs from local organizations at the Aug. 15 event. In addition, guests will receive training tips from trainer Melissa Heeter and her rescue dog, Viola. Heeter will provide customized training techniques based on the different personalities of rescued pets. Pet owners will be able to use the techniques at home with their own pets. Individuals adopting a pet will receive an adoption kit to help them care for the new pet.

Rally Across America is part of a larger campaign known as Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue. The effort is designed to raise funds and awareness for pet-rescue organizations nationwide via local adoption events and the sale of "Doing More for Pets" Tshirts. In addition to being sold by local organizations, items are available for purchase at www.rallytorescue.org. Online sales help Rally to Rescue to aid participating rescue organizations.

This is a very worthwhile event and I encourage people who are looking for a dog for your family to check this event out. Our family's two dogs are two of the best dogs I have ever owned and both were adopted from Pet Rescue of Mercer.
