I have to point out that your highly defensive over-reaction to funny1 exemplifies the reactions I have seen from the teachers union this year.
A 5% cut means the "death of education" in New Jersey? A 1 year wage feeze means we will never again attract qualified teachers to New jersey? Gimme a break.
The NJEA just had a big demonstration and the prior post was about organizing a big demonstration. Lighten up, Francis! |
In order to prevent this thread from becoming a distraction on the Toxic Fill thread, I copied the above into a new topic.
I am really disappointed in the public reaction of the NJEA and its members to what amounts to small budget cuts (5%) and modest concessions (1-year wage freeze and 1.5% healthcare contribution). There is a huge difference between "hating teachers" and believing that modest concessions are reasonable in a period of economic crisis. I will never hate teachers, but the public reaction by their union and membership has significantly tarnished their image in my opinion. |

Why does a group of teachers who dissagree w the changes or propsed changes have a tarnished image?

As someone who was a teacher, I do think the NJEA is out of control. Most teachers are not in line with the NJEA's views because they are either or scenarios. Further, the NJEA's actions have resulted in branding all teachers negatively even if we disagree with them.
Please do not lump your teachers in with the actions from the NJEA office and assume all teachers support the comments made by the NJEA. I am personally hoping for a change in leadership. |

I understand that teachers who disagree with the NJEA are in a tough spot. Unfortunately, because the NJEA bullies and silences dissenters, they maintain a position as the public voice for all teachers.
There are examples of teachers who buck the NJEA and act with courage, reason and sensitivity (like Cranbury). These teachers should be admired and held up as positive examples. Unfortunately, they don't get much press.
It is sad that the NJEA is willing to sacrifice important educational programs and the careers of so many bright young teachers in name of political gamesmanship. I hope these decisions catch up with their leadership. |
