CRANBURY: New library project to go out for bid in March

Feb 23, 2017

After five years of fundraising and planning, the end is in sight for the new Cranbury Public Library.

The combined library and community center design is complete and is going out for bid by March 1. While the bidding and contracting process is underway, the Cranbury Library Foundation is raising the final $220,000 that it estimates will cover the new building construction.

This final fundraising phase of the project is the Community Walk of Knowledge.

“The Community Walk of Knowledge is the outdoor plaza where the new building opens onto the 14-acre open space that the township has preserved for a town square and recreation,” said Michael Ferrante, president of the Cranbury Library Foundation. “This area will include a patio featuring engraved bricks recognizing donors from this final phase. Cranbury residents and businesses can buy a brick and be a “champion” to help finish the project. We want this to be a library and community center for all Cranbury residents.”

To participate in the Community Walk of Knowledge program, residents and businesses can purchase a “champion” brick for $1,000 (8 inches by 8 inches) and select up to six lines of text, to recognize their family, honor a loved one, or include their favorite quote. A “citizen” brick is also available for $500 (4 inches by 8 inches) and has space for up to three lines of text.

The library foundation has partnered with Bricks R Us, a company that helps with brick fundraising programs around the country. Its online ordering page to order bricks can be found at www.bricksrus.com/order/cranburylibrary. There is information about the program at the foundation website as well ( www.cranburylibraryfoundation.org ).

The foundation has been charged with raising the $2.75 million required for the new building, of which $2.55 million has been raised to date. The library project made great progress in 2016 with financial donations of more than $430,000. This month, Bristol-Myers Squibb donated furniture for the new space. Cranbury Township has budgeted $475,000 in 2017 to build a municipal parking lot adjacent to the new building. It is expected that the new library will open in 2018.

We are happy indivisible cranbury and the cranbury library are working together to build a new library and to stop trump. We believe that building our new library and protecting our values, our neighbors, and ourselves will require mounting a similar resistance to the Trump agenda — but a resistance built on the values of inclusion, tolerance, and fairness. Trump is not popular. He does not have a mandate. He does not have large congressional majorities. If a small minority in the Tea Party can stop President Obama, then we the majority can stop a petty tyrant named Trump and build a new library.

To this end, the following chapters offer a step-by-step guide for how indivisible cranbury and the cranbury library are working replicate the Tea Party’s success in getting the Cranbury Township Committee, members of Congress, and our state representatives to listen to our vocal, dedicated group of constituents. The guide is intended to be equally useful for stiffening Cranbury Democratic spines and weakening pro-Trump Republican resolve.

We believe that the next four years depend on Americans across the country standing indivisible against the Trump agenda and so we can build a new library. We believe that buying into false promises or accepting partial concessions will only further empower Trump and cranbury residents and politicians who are against our new library to victimize us and our neighbors. We hope that this guide will provide those who share that belief useful tools to make them listen.

They don't have to buy land. It's going on public land in the field right next to the school tennis courts between the school parking lot and the dead-end at Park Place, which will now end at the entrance to the library parking (i.e. the so called Main Street business district parking lot). It's been earmarked for that location in the master plan for years, though the placement on the lot is different than the previous plan.

I wonder if money already pledged can be used towards a brick or do you need to pledge more money to have a brick?

It would seem pretty bad if people had to pay more.
What happens if a brick breaks. Do they put a new one in? We were going to do a brick at disney until they said if it broke or was where a remodel went then the brick would not be replaced.

Why can't the library go to a referendum so we can get a true understanding of what the taxpayers in this town want?

The TC has begged opponents to show up at a meeting and voice opposition. No one has. So why would they bother with a referendum when no one at all shows up to oppose the library or voice concern? If you can't be bothered to go to a meeting don't complain. It is not like they have held only one meeting. There have been numerous meetings and opportunities all advertised in the agenda. Plus, you can go there at any time and offer comment during the public comment section. So you can go on normal meeting night when no one is there.

Maybe if people showed up there would be a difference. Maybe you'd get a referendum.

You can't say people are too busy because there are always pro library people and the TC which is volunteer spends 2-3 hours every other Monday night meeting.

The library and members of the township committee are Indivisible, their way is the right way. Hopefully everyone will be happy with their taxes going up to support the Indivisible Library.

People probably don't show up because the township committee pledged no taxpayer money would be used to fund a new library, which is not true. Also, folks not supporting the library get personally ridiculed which is another reason to stay quiet or anonymous.

So send an email, show up on a night that nothing is on the agenda. There are a number of ways to voice your view.

The majority of the TC is 3 votes. 3 members are not part of Indivisible so you can't make that connection.

If you haven't voiced any view to a TC member then you can't complain.

Wow, Trump-speak.

It's factually untrue that the TC "begged" people to attend meetings on the library. Numerous people suggested a special meeting on the library many times on this forum and elsewhere, as was done years ago when they were considering buying an existing site and building for the library. The TC consistently refused this. Most library-related business was done during normal TC meetings, often without the library even mentioned on the agenda. Neighbors were not notified before meetings even if they lived in the immediate area of the proposed construction. When neighbors found out anyway and showed up, the decision was deferred and they were supposed to work with the neighbors but instead Mr. Johnson had them avoid doing so them had them into the next TC meeting without putting it on the agenda. Neighbors found out anyway. The point is the TC has been incredibly reluctant to encourage an open dialogue on it. They were so afraid of the cost they are paying for the parking that they had to lie and pretend it wasn't for the library, even though their deal is only to put it in, right next to the library, if it is built.

You can't do all these things to try and not be transparent then turn around and claim no one wanted to participate. When they have called for a special meeting on the library years ago at least 50 people attended, held in the school cafeteria. They have done special meetings subsequently, such as on affordable housing, but have conspicuously avoided them on this despite requests. Why?

At this point, if the library gets the rest of the money it's happening. The big question will be what the bids really come in at and whether that moves the goal posts or if the TC finds another way to contribute while pretending it's not really about helping fund it. One thing you can be confident of is there is absolutely no way the current TC will let there be a special meeting for the public on the library let alone a referendum. Absolutely no chance. For whatever reason, they are absolutely scared of it. It's toxic.

Again, if you oppose it go to any TC meeting. The last time the library presented there was a thread here advertising it and people saying go. No one went. In speaking with TC members no one has sent an email or called.

Sorry, but if people can't bother doing something beside posting here then the TC should not bend to you.

Look at the last meeting notes when the library presented. Numerous TC members complained that no one showed up complaining.
