Students get firsthand look at Princeton.

Cranbury School students had a chance to experience hands-on college-level science experiments Tuesday as the seventh-graders joined hundreds of other middle school students at Princeton University for the Science and Engineering Expo.

Through demonstrations with hydrogen balloons, carbon dioxide-powered cars, dropping bowling balls and dissected sheep brains, the students delved into the fields of chemistry, physics, biology and genetics.

The campuswide expo was hosted by the Princeton Center for Complex Materials and Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials.

Professors, researchers and volunteers from the science and engineering departments on campus also joined in on the day of learning. Nearly 800 middle school students attended the expo, coming from Cranbury, Princeton, Montgomery, West Windsor and Plainsboro.

Frank Foulkes, who, along with Bridget Lundquist, teaches science at the Cranbury School, said the seventh-grade course touches on the basics of the major fields of science. At the expo, students were able to see their textbook knowledge in action, which Mr. Foulkes said, is an important component of learning science.
