A Christmas Tree is a secular (actually pagan) symbol, originating from celebrations of the Winter Solstice. It doesn't have any real Christian significance. I think a Nativity Scene is in order if they are going to add a Menorah.
I appreciate your opinion. I am familiar with the trees origins. However, most Christians and non-Christians consider it a Christian symbol. In fact there is one in my church. I presume there is one in yours also.
But the good news is we can now use the lot to build a massive new home or two. We didn't really need the fire house anyway.

Cranbury, NJ - Joy turned to sadness last night in bucolic Cranbury, NJ as the Main Street holiday display burst into flames, burning down Memorial Park and the Fire Department complex. Apparently, in an effort to improve the aesthetics of Cranbury's newest addition to the holiday display- the controversial Menorah- local residents replaced the electric candle bulbs on the Menorah with actual burning torches.
According to Cranbury Fire Chief Michael Kervan, "It appears the Menorah was placed too close to the dried out Christmas tree and the onset of high winds caused the tree to go up like a tinderbox. Because the holiday display is adjacent to the fire house, Cranbury's Fire Department could not get past the flames to reach their equipment and neighboring Fire Departments had to be called in the drench the blaze."
Township Committeeman Jay Taylor lamented "It's kind of embarrassing to have the fire house burn down. But by the time we knew what was happening the flames had engulfed the fire house. Now its all ruined, and we just spent all that money upgrading the doors and buying new equipment." Then he added "Thank God no one was hurt."
Police Chief Rickey Varga stated "The fire is under investigation. Due to the controversy surrounding the Menorah, we have a pool of suspects we need to interview. I am confident we're going to find out who did this."
Speaking on behalf of the historical society, Betty Wagner exclaimed "There were no Menorahs in Cranbury when David Brainerd was alive. We warned the Town Council that violating our town's history could have dire consequences. However, I can tell you we were not responsible. Setting the Menorah on fire was voted down 3-2 at our last committee meeting. "
Richard Callan, self-appointed voice of Cranbury's Jewish community commented "Everybody always wants to blame the Jews, but it wasn't us! Every Jew knows the candles aren't even supposed to be lit, yet." He then went on speaking for another 20 minutes.
Although the culprit remains a mystery, a source at the Cranbury Police Department speaking on condition of anonymity indicated that they are investigating a hot lead. Apparently, the firestarter may have sent an apology note to town hall. According to sources, the note said "I'm sorry. I thought the blue lights of the Christmas tree were filled with water that would put the fire out".

Someone needs to put some brighter bulbs in the menorh you can't even see the Christmas tree. Next year how about this no Christmas tree and no menorh.

But, Xmas trees are so pretty and colorful.
Menorahs are so dull and plain.
Whats with the white light bulbs?
It would be much cooler looking with real flames coming out of it.
Who designed those things to be so boring to look at?
At least put up an attractive one!
Me too

I was a vocal supporter of the Menorah going up and think it's a fine addition.
But your rant that this Township is 1940's Germany is sad dribble that is every bit as offensive as some of the commenters who tried to veil their objections to the Menorah in silly arguments like the Christmas tree being not being associated with Christianity. I know a lot of people in this town and most don't have an anti-Semitic bone in their bodies. The fact that the Committee approved the Menorah unanimously and without any opposition speaks to that. Our schools even celebrate the Jewish holidays, something my schools never did growing up despite a much larger Jewish population than we have. You take 1-2 idiots making anonymous comments on this site and condemn the population of the Township unfairly. Shame on you.
I pretty much agree with the above statement.
I would add that, IMO, many people who are labeled as anti-Semites, are really Christian exclusives. What I mean is, they see America as a Christian country and are opposed to the equal inclusion of any other religions. I don't agree with, or defend, the viewpoint of Christian exclusives. However, I think there is a difference between someone who would persecute Jews vs. someone who would argue to exclude all non-Christian religions.
I'm glad Cranbury made the right choice about including a Menorah and I hope we continue to find ways to make all Cranbury residents feel included in this special community.

Considering I sat here and decided to humor myself with the type of people that live in this stupid town, I figured that I would post a response. The majority are just beating around the bush as to your comments on the menorah being put up in town. The short answer to all of your grievances is this. You all are just suffering from a thing us Jews like to call "Anti-Semitism". You obviously hate the Jewish people and are too afraid to say anything about the subject. So you take your so called "knowledge" of the subject and talk about how it shouldn't be near the tree it should be in the park where no one can see it and you can sit here and try and talk about how the CHRISTMAS tree doesn't represent Christmas. Well unfortunately as much as you want to talk about how it comes from pagan routes and all of that, just understand that it IS associated with YOUR holiday whether YOU like it or not. The fact that this menorah is going up is a HUGE step forward considering how 1940's Germany this town still is. God forbid they put something up that isn't dedicated to Christ. Half of you just hide behind your computers and talk about these things instead of going to the meetings and discussing your feelings about the subject. So honestly if you weren't there and this is some huge problem that you guys have too bad. Deal with it. I went to the meeting and spoke my mind and defended the Rabbi and supported everything that he wanted to do [which wasn't much at all] and if you want to reply to this with your comments feel free, but if you want to talk to me in person you can bet that I'll be there at the lighting on Tuesday night.

If someone in town would like something for Kwanzaa, I have no problem with that. I take it you do.
Actually, I have no problem with Kwanzaa since I celebrate it. I would like to see something in town for my religion. I was stating it is only fair!!

The tree is 9' tall. The Menorah as stated at the meeting is 6' tall.

So did anyone publically speak against it? The article doesn't reflect that if so. And if not, I wonder why they felt so strongly about it anonymously here but not enough to speak at the meeting where it was actually being decided.
Religion is a very touchy subject, especially if you are atheist in our town. I would rather not be vilified over something that will be displayed over a short period of time. However, this Menorah seems very large at 7 feet tall.
Did you express the same concerns about the height of the Christmas tree?

I don't get the purpose of discussing this in this forum after the fact, except for the sour grapes aspect. We had a public meeting where your opinion could be heard and would have actually mattered. On this forum your opinion has no effect on anything, except making a handful of other people virtually apoplectic. This has been decided. The township will review it again next year. If you feel strongly one way or the other, bring it up at that time.

It is not the place for the TC to permit the Menorah or Nativity scene to be displayed on township property. It has nothing to due with intollerance, but with who is displaying the actual artifacts. The town represents everyone in our town, which I am a Cranburian, a non-believer (yes, an atheist). I truly believe in separation of church and state. It's ok to have a lighted tree with the thoughts of santa, elves, reindeer, etc. displayed on township property. But, that is as far as I want to see it go. It is not the place of the TC to suggest which religion are preferred in our town.
Please realize, I don't mind at all that the churches display nativity scenes or neighbors with menorahs, nativity scenes, or other holiday displays. That is everyone's personal choice, and my choice is different.
I post, not to be preached to, but to have an equal voice.
So you would prefer a 10 foot tall dreidel to a menorah?
I guess I should have placed and etc after Menorah or Nativity scene. Perhaps you should reread my entire post to further understand my viewpoint.
As I read it, your point is that you don't want religious symbols in a township display. However, it seems you are OK with what you deem to be secular or cultural symbols that are not religious. A dreidel is not a religious symbol.
Perhaps you should re-read your entire post to make sure
you
understand your viewpoint.
