Post subject: NJ Homestead Rebate- another scam uncovered
Those who filed a rebate should know they were paid on Monday.
When I got mine I found an interesting thing, the amount was less than half of what I was due.
What I found out is that NJ offers you no credit if you moved during the year. I moved into my home in Sept. 2007, so my rebate was only paid based on the taxes I paid while I was in my new home. The taxes I paid in my old home were not included in the calculation as the program rules are written to exclude taxes paid in a prior residence. So even though I paid a full 12 months of property taxes I received credit for only October-Dec. As I was nicely told I should have moved in January if I wanted a full rebate and the rules clearly state taxes paid on the home you occupied on Oct. 1.
So, when we sell our home we pay a tax to NJ. When we move we recieve no credit for prior taxes paid and essentially I was retaxed without even knowing. I was due 1,200 and received $498.99. So NJ just took me for another $700.00. The fees I paid to NJ for selling my home now exceed $5,000.
Just another way that our NJ politicans and our great Governor continue to committ legalized fraud.
