CRANBURY: Businessman accused of bilking relative out of $500K
DATE POSTED: Thursday, July 5, 2012 5:45 PM EDT
By Charles W. Kim, Packet Media Group
HIGHTSTOWN — Borough police have charged local funeral home owner Joseph Barlow, 68, of Cranbury, with theft, claiming the businessman stole some $500,000 from a 96-year-old distant relative.
Mr. Barlow, a partner in the Barlow & Zimmer Funeral Home on Stockton Street in the borough, surrendered to borough police last week on a warrant charging him with one count of theft, according to Hightstown Detective Benjamin Miller.
According to the warrant, Mr. Barlow obtained power of attorney in March 2011 from a 96-year-old female relative who lives in the borough. (Packet Media Group editors are not identifying the victim because of the nature of the crime.)
Since that time, the warrant claims, Mr. Barlow wrote a total of four checks to himself, which he then endorsed and cashed at a Wachovia Bank.
Three of the checks were for $35,000 and the fourth for $55,000, according to the warrant.
In addition, the warrant alleges Mr. Barlow also canceled a life insurance policy on the victim, taking the cash value of more than $300,000 in September 2011. Police were made aware of the alleged activity by the state’s Adult Protective Services in May, according to police.
Mr. Barlow was released on $25,000 bail, and the case has been referred to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office for possible grand jury action, Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Casey DeBlasio said.
According to Ms. DeBlasio, the count is a second-degree crime and carries a penalty of five to 10 years in prison if there is a conviction.
When reached at home Monday, Mr. Barlow referred questions about the case to his attorney.
Neither Mr. Barlow nor police agencies involved thus far, however, could identify who would be representing him in the case.
Mr. Barlow and partner Richard Zimmer bought the funeral home from the estate of the late Middlesex County Freeholder Director David B. Crabiel in 2009 for $470,000, according to borough records.
Both Mr. Barlow and Mr. Zimmer worked in the Crabiel funeral home prior to the purchase, according to the funeral home’s website.
The property is assessed at $415,000 and generates almost $13,000 in taxes, according to the borough. Taxes on both the funeral home and Mr. Barlow’s North Main Street residence in Cranbury are paid up to date, according to officials.
The Cranbury residence is assessed at $375,000 and was billed $6,217 in taxes in 2012, according to state records.
”They (Police Department) are doing a great job (on the case),” said Police Director James Le Tellier on July 3. “Detective Miller has devoted a lot of time working on this case and with Adult Protective Services to protect the victim from any more harm and wrongdoing.”
Detective Miller said the investigation is continuing in the case.
Correspondents Amy Batista and Nicole Cosentino contributed to this report.

I checked the website of the county prosecutor's office. I did not see a news release; however, the most current was from 6/19. I was unable to locate the source of info on this allegation. Interesting since it appears (or is intended to appear) as a cut and paste of a law enforcement release.
I have no idea of the post's validity. If it is fabricated as one poster suggests, it raises an important issue of online slander.

Could be slander? It is not in the Hightstown blotter or anywhere else on the internet.
