Camden man carjacked Merecedes in Cranbury, then crashed after police chase:
CRANBURY – A Camden has been charged with carjacking, kidnapping and other offenses after he allegedly forced a 79-year-old man out of his Mercedes and then crashed the stolen car while trying to flee police.
Frankie N. Gonzalez, 19, forced his way into the Mercedes, which was stopped at a red light on Route 130 at the Dey Road intersection Monday morning, and told the driver that he had a gun, authorities said. According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey, Gonzalez told the driver, whose name was withheld, to drive south on Route 130.
Soon after, Gonzalez released the man unharmed on North Main Street and took off with his 2009 Mercedes CLK, Carey's office said today.
Hightstown police saw the stolen car on Route 130 in Robbinsville and tried to stop Gonzalez, authorities said. Gonzalez pulled over, but reportedly took off again, this time for Route 195, before police could take him into custody. But he didn't make it very far, Carey's office said: He allegedly crashed the Mercedes on a Route 195 off-ramp, and was arrested by State Police.
Gonzalez was unhurt in the crash, authorities said. He was returned to Cranbury and charged.
He is being held on $500,000 bail at a correctional facility in North Brunswick. In addition to carjacking and kidnapping, he's also charged with aggravated assault, robbery, theft, burglary and terroristic threats. |
