Rate File: Select Rating: * ** *** **** <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The 2008 crime rate remained close to its 2007 figure, with only minor changes in Cranbury, Jamesburg and Monroe, according to the 2008 Uniform Crime Report issued by the New Jersey State Police last week. <br /> <br /> In Cranbury, the overall crime rate per 1,000 residents, dropped from 15.9 percent in 2007 to 14.5 percent in 2008. <br /> <br /> Most of Monroe’s statistics remained stable, according to the report, with the crime index total dropping from 269 incidents reported in 2007 to 266 incidents in 2008. <br /> <br /> In Jamesburg the crime index totals increased from 73 incidents in 2007 to 81 in 2008. <br /> <br /> Although Cranbury’s crime index totals saw a decrease, from 62 incidents in 2007 to 57 incidents in 2008, Police Chief Edward Kahler said he couldn’t take credit for the change. <br /> ”It’s interesting because the UCR, first of all, includes the (N.J.) Turnpike,” he said. “So it’s hard to comment on. It’s not just our jurisdiction.” <br /> <br /> The violent crime rate dropped in Cranbury from 1.5 percent per 1,000 residents in 2007 to 0.5 percent in 2008 along with the nonviolent crime rate which fell from 14.4 percent in 2007 to 13.9 percent last year. <br /> <br /> Violent crimes dropped from six incidents reported in 2007 to two incidents reported in 2008, according to the report. <br /> <br /> Incidents of larceny, or theft of property, dropped noticeably, from 45 in 2007 to 32 in 2008.There was one robbery, or larceny using the threat of violence, in 2008, compared to zero in 2007, and 21 burglaries, breaking into a vehicle, house, store, or other enclosure, in 2008 compared to six the year prior. <br /> <br /> In Jamesburg, the crime rate per 1,000 residents increased from 11.4 percent in 2007 to 12.7 percent in 2008. <br /> <br /> Violent crimes per 1,000 residents rose from 0.8 percent to 1.3 percent, or five incidents to eight. <br /> <br /> Likewise, nonviolent crimes per 1,000 residents increased from 10.6 percent in 2007 (68 incidents) to 11.4 percent in 2008 (73). <br /> <br /> Three rapes were reported in 2008 compared to one in 2007, according to the report. Two robberies were reported in 2008; one in 2007.
