Post subject: Re: Cranbury Township Committee Elections
In addition to COAH and school consolidation, the list of state democratic initiatives that are particularly bad for Cranbury also includes...
Plans to force townships to merge, cutting aid to towns of less than 5,000 people, elimination of most property tax rebates and turnpike toll increases, not to mention a slew of other personal and business taxes, unfunded mandates and wasteful spending programs that drive up costs and drive out businesses. This is the cost of an imbalanced power structure at the state level.
Changing the Governor is our best opportunity to bring some balance to a state government that is laying seige to our town!

I agree with M. Goldberg's comments, especially on the TC. My family is in a similar situation. We have been life-long Democrats, and are still registered as such and vote for national elections on the Democratic ticket (though we do vet each candidate and are not opposed to crossing party lines if the other party ever truly has a great candidate). But we started voting Republican in NJ state and local elections. Like many others we started attending Township Committee meetings and following local events are we shocked at the seeming agenda and sensibility of the local Democratic TC members. They promised no discretionary spending then lied and tried to ram through completely discretionary major spending measures. And they locked any non-Democrats out of Township appointed positions. That level of partisanship is disgusting at the local level and they should be ashamed of themselves. The only way I differ with M. Goldberg's statements is the idea of still voting Democrat at the state level. Frankly it’s hard to see why anyone living in Cranbury should do so, since it is the State Democratic party that is the driving force behind the COAH changes that could bankrupt our Township or force us to merge, it is our Democratic state assembly members that have done absolutely nothing to help us (and one of them won't even bother acknowledging the existence of Cranbury constituents) and it is the State Democratic party that wants to force the Cranbury School to merge with other districts and in the process reduce Cranbury taxpayer input to a token minority role at best.

Post subject: Re: Cranbury Township Committee Elections
Let me preface my comments by saying I am a Democrat and will NEVER voter Republican on the state and federal level.
I am relatively new to town, less than 10 years and have seen a few things occur recently in town that make me wonder about our TC and how we as a party act. I have the following thoughts on this election.
- Mr. Mulligan and Mr. Taylor seem to really want to be on the TC and from what I can see they both have qualifications we need including a desire to serve. To me this is key considering the time and hours spent especially if they have families. The Press stated they have been at every meeting confirming their statements and work ethic.
- If the Democrats locally could not find candidates for the primary, then how dedicated will these write-in candidates be if they are elected to office? In my estimation, we are best served by people who want the job rather than people who are doing it because the Democrats need place fillers or hope to win to keep party seats. Honestly, what does a Democrat or Republican majority mean? Our state representatives ignore our town right now.
- Now, would be a perfect time for the Democrats and Republicans to come together as a unified group of concerned residents. Rather than seek two candidates, why not have the party meet with Mr. Mulligan and Mr. Taylor to understand their positions and for them to understand the Democrats. The candidates are saying they are independent in thought. So perhaps they and the Democrats can be on the same page. From the Democrat stand point it is our chance to show we too are concerned about the town, as a political party. We can show town interest is key to us by working with Mr. Mulligan and Mr. Taylor instead of opposing them and potentially losing qualified people.
- My question to fellow voters opposing my idea is how can we as residents really get behind two people who would seemingly have no desire or interest to serve? If we had two Democrats in the primary, I would be in support of them, but that is not the case.
I think this is our opportunity to come together as a strong group. We can support two town residents who want to serve and at the same time show we care more about our town than party polictics for which we have been blamed for the last 6-10 years. We can also ensure that the two Republican candidates understand our concerns and be open with them about what we view as important.

Saw in the Cranbury Press today that the Dem part is actively soliciting candidates for a write-in. They apparently only need THREE votes for the candidate to advance to the primary so it looks like this isn't over yet, as Jay indicated. It did confirm that neither incumbent is running though...
I found Stave's quote interesting. She said she is not re-running because she wants to "leave on a high note" and that the town is in "great shape now." I find that revealing for two reasons. One, because it implies that she thinks won't stay as positive a position -- thus the "high note" now and it also seems like an odds statement given the rising Township taxes and still looming COAH issue.
Nonetheless, I salute both Mayor Stave and Tom P. for their service and dedication to the community. Thank you.

Thank you. However, nothing is certain until after the primary when we see if there are any write in candidates. Dan and I are both proceeding as though it's business as usual and we're going to continue to work hard in order to demonstrate our energy and desire to help the town and residents.
I am actually looking at this as an opportunity to raise issues before the TC and for people to be open in their dialogue. Doing yard work in the front of my house last Sunday, a number of people came up and spoke with me concerning the town and voiced ideas that I thought were great.
In terms of the soil testing kit, it measures acidity, nitrogen content, phosphorous, etc... The town provides a small bag and envelope in which you put the soil. Then you simply mail it to Rutgers. In about a month you get a report with fertilizer and soil treatment recommendations. Cranbury has highly acidic soil so I wanted to measure my soil against last year to see how things went.
Jay Taylor
PS- To answer the one poster's question any candidate running (whether in office today or not) has to either file or win as a write-in in order to appear on the November ballot.

I'd appreciate clarification on what this means...do incumbents need to file for their candidacy/intent to run? If not, does this mean Pari and Tom are not seeking re-election?

Great. I guess congratulations are in order then. That must be weird -- to be de facto elected about 9 months before the term starts...
What are the soil testing kirts exactly -- I get that they test soil obviously, but what are they testing for, what is the issue?

I stopped in the township office this morning and spoke with Mrs. Cunningham when I went to pick up my soil testing kit.
The deadline to file was yesterday. Dan Mulligan and I were the only two candidates to file for the primary election.
Jay Taylor
(As a side note, the soil kits are free for town residents and there are still a number of them available.)

So did no emocrats file to run and its going to be an uncontested election? Or did someone file at the last minute? The Star Ledger si only listing the Republican candidates.
