I actually work for a Fortune 500 company (including responsibility over IT) and my Facebook friends includes many others from Fortune 500 cos, including many NYC-based major finance institutions. I thought it would be poetic to use Facebook to send a link to this and see what my Fortune 500 friends thought of whether their cos blocked Facebook. So far from 18 responses, none of them say Facebook is blocked at their work. Some of them do have some content blocked, but not Facebook, LinkedIn or the other major networking sites. I’m sure there must be some Fortune 500 cos that are silly enough to do this, but I have never heard or read anything that suggests most do. I think you are vastly overstating or assuming. In my experience, most Fortune 500 cos consider Facebook a valid business tool. I can’t speak to government agencies.
Me too and these sites are typically not blocked.
Well ladies, that is 18 out of 500, you have more whining to do.
I can tell you that a large discount broker will let you get to the FB home page but not login. Same for Linkedin. It is blocked by the firewall policy.
I am done having a battle of wits with unarmed people.
Hilarious. The poster repeatedly claims to definitively know that "most" Fortune 500 companies block Facebook. Repeatedly asked to cite some source for this claim all he can come up with is to anonymously list a single "large discountage broker" who allegedly does block it. Why not just list the company?
It's kind of fun watching people be dumb in public. Cranbury's very on LiLo...

Grow up? Do you really think name caling is the mature thing to do? That's pretty funny.
I can't prove that OJ killed Nicole, but I guess in your opinion I am an idiot for believing it to be true.
If you're going to wear blinders, might I suggest you also wear a helmet?

Facebook contraversy aside, it still strikes me as inappropriate to prompt students to get involved in a private HR matter.
Again, I would be curious to see the hard evidence that Mr. Cox did this. What parents do independently with their own kids is their business, and if their kids ask to support him at a public hearing I don't think its unreasonable for them to support their kids decisions. I have only seen rumor and unsubstantiated allegations that Mr. Cox encouraged this.
Yeah, it was probably the board that posted that 1-sided pro-Cox story with all the detailed information about "the truth" and encouraged everyone to bring their kids out in support of Mr. Cox. That makes a lot more sense.
Are you really an idiot or do you just play on on the Internet?
People have been talking about this for at least a month or more. I was a popular topic of conversation amoung parents at the Drug Free Fair. I have had other parents bring it up to new at least a few times prior to reading it here. Any number of parents could have initiated the topic here or organized the support for him at the meeting. And as you imply, the "truth" listed here isn't even verified which means anyone who heard the rumors could have posted it, not just Mr. Cox.
Grow up.

Kids have rallied to support teachers for years. Growing up I did so for an English teacher in Cranbury who was facing being let go do to tenure rules. She was excellent.

Please do not call me an extremist or terrorist for asking a very simple question.
I am just curious.
Thank you all.
The poster compared to an extremist (whether that was you or someone else) was not "asking a simple question" -- they were universally condemning those sites and saying they were glad they didn't have kids at the school. Apples to Oranges to a simple question.
As for your question, kids aren't even legally supposed to have accounts on those sites until they are 13 and personally I don’t support encouraging them to lie about their age. After that, I wouldn't have a problem with them friending a teacher, assuming the teacher accepted students as friends, which most don't. Personally I also require my kids to give me their passwords and to friend me as well so I can audit their activity. You must not be a Facebook user if you think of "friends" as literal. I have hundreds of friends on Facebook some of which are merely professional acquaintances. It is a general tool for networking and communication. In many lines of work now it is a given you have to have a Facebook account and network with it. And I have teenage nieces and nephews who are “friends” on Facebook too. I also have “friends” who were my teachers back in elementary, middle and high school. This is incredibly common. Again, it is a general communication and networking tool, unless abused, and anything can be abused if not monitored.
BTW, do you have specific evidence that Mr. Cox is friending middle school kids under 13? That wasn’t previously discussed. Sounds like yet another rumor.
I am very familiar with the uses for Facebook and myspace. Most companies now block Facebook and myspace from their corporate networks. So please do your homework prior to eating the apple.
yes children do lie about their age to gain access to these sites.
I did not accuse anyone of anything but posed a question to the viewers about their own children and if they had issues with their children being a teachers friend on those sites.
I never mentioned any teacher in particular and since you draw the line from a generic question to Mr. Cox, guess I will have to look him up and see what students are on his friends list.
That's easy enough!!! thanks for pointing this out.
You need not be so determined to defend Mr. Cox, my intent was a generic question but since this is sensitive to you, you are either a teacher or work in the school based on your comments.
You should not be on this at work! More tax dollars being wasted.
You really don't know what you're talking about, clearly. "Most" companies do not block these sites. Would you like to cite your source for this fact or provide a link?
As for tax dollars, why are they wasted? I don't work for a public company. I'm not even at work. And aren't you posting too?
Who said anything about defending Mr. Cox? I have no dog in this fight because I know nothing about the circumstances pertaining to Mr. Cox specifically. I trust the school board to collect the facts and do the right thing. I only object to vast generalizations and misinformation on any topic.
And give it a rest with your weak claim that you weren't inferring about Mr. Cox with your teacher friending students comment. This entire topic is about Mr. Cox. Read the title. If you wanted to change the subject you would have said so.
I have no idea if you are a Troll or someone with an axe to grind but clearly you have an agenda. That's cool. Just don't expect others to follow...
I never referenced Mr. Cox in my post. The defender did.
Most large and some small companies DO block social websites from their network so as to not lose productivity from their employees, or Lose sensitive data that can be transmitted off their networks.
Call any fortune 500/1000 company and ask for their communications policy, since you are home and have time.
Most medical, financial, industrial, and government agencies filter their network content.
Clearly it is YOU who needs an education on this. No agenda here, just laughing at the nonsense.
The real reason for the original post is there seems to be many parents reading here and a good source of input on the Social Network topic.
Now who has an agenda?
Thank you.
