Post subject: Re: Cranbury Public Library
From the beginning the Town stated they would build a lot as it would also be used for down town parking. They are not building a lot specifically for a library.
The TC has stated they support a library provided the costs are fully raised by donations and the library can prove it can cover the costs.
As the prior poster stated the library is independent of the town with their own regulations and board policy.
Taxes and funding are from the state. The library this year asked for funds beyond that level and the TC and Mayor denied additional funding as the library has a surplus.
I don't see where the Mayor and TC are to blame. They have stated the same position over and over. Further they showed that they will not provide additional funds this year which makes me believe they will keep the same position going forward.

PREPOSTEROUS to say town is out of it!!
TC appoints and\or approves Library Board of Directors! Library employees receive a paycheck from The Township of Cranbury!
Library employees get paid via the library, the library payroll is approved by the library board and is funded by the taxes collected by state law for the library which are added on to our property taxes. The checks do come from Cranbury Township though it is by law all at the direction of the library. The library board answers to no one and makes its own rules and does what it wants with the money it receives by law
TC cut Library budget by what $30-40K this year resulting in library service cuts and reduced hours of operation!
This cut was a due to a reduction in property value and since the library funding is state law and calculated based on our property value the library gets more money then when our property value goes up and less when it goes down. The library board chose to cut hours instead of reducing the library payroll. They could have layed people off or reduced the employee hours, instead they closed the doors to the building
Earlier this year the TC agreed to 'give' Library a parking lot paved and lighted, at TC expense not Library Foundation expense, at its proposed new bldg location at Park Place.
I do not know about the parking lot
No, the Mayor and Council, i.e. the Town, is in the library issue in a most Teflon stance.
I do not know what the mayor and council want other then I have heard them say the money should be raised privately

Right now the town is out of the library issue. The library is fund raising on their own. Once they have the money they will need the town approval to build.
They have been told and know their expenses are their own. They have a budget already prepared.

I guess it's like being 2/3 of the way to a construction cost estimate made by an architect 5 years ago. Is anyone going to be surprised when the actual cost to build is substantially higher?
Is the Township really interested in shouldering a $4-$5 million dollar depreciating asset?
Stop the madness... Save Our Library!
Got my letter from Library for more money to get shovel ready! But wait, Ms. Mullen, how long will the new building sit empty until you have the FULL funding to furnish it, heat it, clean it and secure it?
Foolish to break ground on a building that is not fully funded.
Mayor, it's irresponsible to not obtain a re-assessment in current market dollars of what this new library building will cost.

I see that the library is closed the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. 3 full time librarians, closed on Sunday, 21 holidays per year, short summer hours. I guess it doesn't matter since it seems like there isn't much demand for library services when school is not in session.

Actually, it's quite clear that many of the claims made by library are dubious, starting with the claim that we "need" a new library.

Yes, the new library will lead to the deaths of children as they will cross a parking lot. How did so many of us grow up to be adults?
Yes, the library will bankrupt the town. All the money raised privately to build it will affect my tax rate.
Yes, this is madness. People write comments to this message board from our public library. Oh wait, does that mean people use our library and there is a use for it in town?

Thank you, Township Committee, for hosting the information session on the library. Funds raised - 2/3 of the way there. 80% of the donations pledged have been received. School will benefit from this as they can have secured, dedicated library space for the students.
Here we go with the BS "security issue" again. This persistent scare tactic undermines other claims made by supporters of this wasteful project.
I guess it's like being 2/3 of the way to a construction cost estimate made by an architect 5 years ago. Is anyone going to be surprised when the actual cost to build is substantially higher?
Is the school really excited about losing $60k in rent AND having to foot the bill for additional library resources?
Is the Township really interested in shouldering a $4-$5 million dollar depreciating asset?

Apparently you attended the information session on Monday night as did I.
There were no questions or comments at that time about the statistics.
Also, I note by your guest name that you are posting from the Public Library. You just stop ask Marilynn about those numbers.
the library is lying about safety concerns the school has because the school has said nothing publicly about asking the library to leave due to security. The school will not say anything publicly because they know they would then need to help pay for the new library.
someone (from the library) trying to intimate a poster by pointing out they used a library computer to post their disagreement with the Library's statistics. The message here is do not use our computers to disagree with us because we are watching.
be warned the small crowd that wants a new library will stop at nothing to lie, intimidate and embarrass anyone that disagrees.

Good presentations by Mullen & Ferrante, but the statistics are unsound.
