The 2008 crime rate remained close to its 2007 figure, with only minor changes in Cranbury, Jamesburg and Monroe, according to the 2008 Uniform Crime Report issued by the New Jersey State Police last week.
In Cranbury, the overall crime rate per 1,000 residents, dropped from 15.9 percent in 2007 to 14.5 percent in 2008.
Most of Monroe’s statistics remained stable, according to the report, with the crime index total dropping from 269 incidents reported in 2007 to 266 incidents in 2008.
In Jamesburg the crime index totals increased from 73 incidents in 2007 to 81 in 2008.
Although Cranbury’s crime index totals saw a decrease, from 62 incidents in 2007 to 57 incidents in 2008, Police Chief Edward Kahler said he couldn’t take credit for the change.
”It’s interesting because the UCR, first of all, includes the (N.J.) Turnpike,” he said. “So it’s hard to comment on. It’s not just our jurisdiction.”
The violent crime rate dropped in Cranbury from 1.5 percent per 1,000 residents in 2007 to 0.5 percent in 2008 along with the nonviolent crime rate which fell from 14.4 percent in 2007 to 13.9 percent last year.
Violent crimes dropped from six incidents reported in 2007 to two incidents reported in 2008, according to the report.
Incidents of larceny, or theft of property, dropped noticeably, from 45 in 2007 to 32 in 2008.There was one robbery, or larceny using the threat of violence, in 2008, compared to zero in 2007, and 21 burglaries, breaking into a vehicle, house, store, or other enclosure, in 2008 compared to six the year prior.
In Jamesburg, the crime rate per 1,000 residents increased from 11.4 percent in 2007 to 12.7 percent in 2008.
Violent crimes per 1,000 residents rose from 0.8 percent to 1.3 percent, or five incidents to eight.
Likewise, nonviolent crimes per 1,000 residents increased from 10.6 percent in 2007 (68 incidents) to 11.4 percent in 2008 (73).
Three rapes were reported in 2008 compared to one in 2007, according to the report. Two robberies were reported in 2008; one in 2007. There were three aggravated assaults, or physical attacks, in both 2007 and 2008.
In Monroe the crime rate per 1,000 residents fell from 7.7 percent in 2007 to 7.3 percent in 2008, while the violent crime rate remained steady at 0.3.
There were no reports of rapes or robberies in 2008 while 2007 saw one report of each.
Aggravated assaults increased from nine in 2007 to 11 in 2008 and motor vehicle thefts increased from 12 to 15.
Police in Jamesburg and Monroe did not return telephone calls for comment.

Last week, the Cranbury Press reported that the campout was on Friday. This week we have 14.5% crime rate per 1000 residents.
I am sorry, but the paper keeps getting worse every week. How does this math make any sense? I hope they mean 14.5 reported crimes per 1000 residents? |

Here is my interpretation:
For Cranbury,
2007:
Total: 62 = 6 (violent crime) + 56 (non-violent crime)
2008:
Total: 57 = 2 (violent crime) + 55 (non-violent crime)
Per 1,000 people:
===============
2007 (Cranbury had about 3,900 people):
The crime rate per 1000 people is 15.9 (= 62/3.9).
2008 (Cranbury had about 3,930 people):
The crime rate per 1000 people is 14.5 (= 57/3.93).
Note that crime rate is not in *percentage* (%) as reported by the Cranbury Press. |

The population is based on the people living in the Township. This doesn't count the 1000's of people in the Township daily. |

So how does the whole population (warehouse workers and such) figure into these stats?
How many people are in this town but do not live here? Plus how many people are driving through ? Anyone know where to locate those stats? |
