Why the he'll does the fire and rescue whistles have to be left on at night. Can't they be shut off at night I'm pretty sure that everybody has there pagers and scanners on, I don't need to be awaken by the whistles and sirens. Why must the sirens need to be ran so much at night there isn't that much traffic on main st in the middle of the night. Must be to let everyone know and it says"LOOK AT ME" |

Is this a joke post from some student just waiting to laugh at the replies? It feels "troll-like" -- tailor made not for an honest opinion but solely to get strong responses given the well known previous raging responses on the fire horn and motorcycle posts. What, you couldn't just re-read those, you were feeling bored and had to start a new flame war?
I don't really believe anyone sincrely holds the opinion of the poster so please feel free not to waste your time with expressing outrage at the suggestion because that's exactly what they want. |

How about it says "Hey!, your Volunteer Firefighters are out serving you for free. And while you get to roll over and go back to sleep, they're out protecting our town." Put in the time and effort our volunteer fire and first aid members do to serve Cranbury and then talk to me about the siren. |

Cut some slack on the poster. I live in Shadow Oaks and last night I heard the alarm go off. I'm so glad I don't live by the fire department where they relocated the alarm after the water tower was taken down.
I agree, this concept of a fire alarm is so old school - I cannot imagine any of our volunteers (and thanks to them BTW), do not have cell phones, pagers, etc as devices to be alerted. The fire alarm concept comes from a time when people had to be alerted to grab buckets from their wells to help put out a fire. This is 2010 - sheesh. |

Just for argument sake, What if the volunteer fireperson or first aid person is cutting their grass, running any kind of noisy machinery and their pager goes off and they do not hear it? It means less people will show up to stop YOUR House from burning or cut YOU or YOUR FAMILY MEMBER out of a crashed car.
There is a purpose for the loud horn otherwise your NEIGHBORS who VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME would not have it in place.
Like a previous poster said, VOLUNTEER first, then come talk to me about the siren/horn ! |

This is simply a troll thread and I hate to respond and keep it going, but I am anyway.
I live within a 3-5 minute walking distance to the fire house so I should be one of the first to complain since it is so loud near me. However, I accept that this is part of our small town community. When the alarm goes off I think about how great it is that we still have volunteer squads. The First Aid siren does not go off after 9pm and the fire is not that frequent.
I also think if I am in trouble whether my house is burning, my neighbors or god forbid I need an ambulance than I want every possible alarm, bell, whistle, pager, or cell phone to go off. I want those guys coming to my aid as soon as possible. We have Cranbury Green with homes close to each other, we have Main St. with old wood homes right next door to each other and if one house starts with a major fire we could find it out of control fast.
So yes, I want every method employed to make sure the fire company and first aid squad members can get into action. |

What do you mean for"free"? Doesn't it cost to maintain and buy the equipment? Doesn't it cost money to maintain the firehouse and rescue squad(water, gas, electric)? I personally think that we should combine services with the larger towns around us(plainsboro,Monroe, south brunswick, east Windsor). |

Then not only are we paying for those same items, but for paid fire and first aid employees as well.
Plus, right now, if you need an ambulance and you have insurance the insurance is charged, but you are not billed for any remaining balance. If you do not have insurance then you are not charged. If you combine with another town you will be charged.
The TC meets every other Monday at Town Hall. If you have these ideas or concerns about the siren, show up and raise them. |

The Troll wins. You all took the bait.
Is there any possible thing that can be said here that wasn't already written in the previous posts on this exact same topic? What's the point of rehashing the same exact comments? |

Maybe you should move to one of the towns you listed, it would be good for you and better for the rest of us.
I love the way this town is and would not like anything to change. Larger towns will not give the same service that we have here at present. I am not willing to give it up to save very little money. |

Agree and it's to me all about community in addition to the actual work they do. The Fire Co. selling burgers on Cranbury Day, escorting Santa around at Christmas and hosting him for the kids to meet, the town doing carols in the station, the company visiting school to speak with the kids, out for the 4th of July fireworks.
It amazes me how many big town people move here for a small town atmosphere and then turn around and want to be bigger, be part of something bigger, or provide big town services. We moved here for the small town community where our firemen waive, police know us by first name, teachers care about our kids, where the ice cream people (Gil and Berts) know my daughter loves vanilla ice cream and know her and us by name, where the librarian knows my daughter's favorite author and where if I need work down I can walk into town hall and get a permit in a few days or if I call town hall I speak to someone who actually calls me back. I never had this anywhere and don't want to see us chase dollars and lose our identity. |

The alarm sounded last night at app.12:15am and then the truck sirens were blaring so loudly. I do agree with the shadow oaks poster this is 2010 ,why can't the volunteers use their walkie talkies to be alerted. With respect to the volunteers they should be equiped with the latest"Sound the alarm" devices.with respect to the residents the siren/alarm should be silenced during late evening-early morning hours. |

If you look at the TC meeting reports, Mr. Taylor details the fire and first aid calls in the first meeting of every month. The fire siren is the only one that goes off after 9pm so I have detailed them below. There are not that many calls that people can't simply ignore the siren.
December
14 calls; three (3) occurred during the day and 11 during the evening.
January
There were 15 calls 3 during the day and 12 during the evening hours.
Feb
13 calls and 6 were in the evening
March
8 calls, 3 day and 5 evening
I believe evening is 3pm or later. So it's not that big a deal. |
