Bloomberg Mulling Charging For Garbage Pickup
Forget Your Taxes, Mayor Considering Additional 'Pay As You Throw' Fee To Help Cash-Strapped New York City

NEW YORK (CBS) ― There was a move Thursday to spin garbage into gold.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he's thinking about plugging his budget gap by charging New York City residents a fee for trash removal.

City residents produce 11,000 tons of trash every day. Collecting it is covered by taxes.

To bad for New York City. We are lucky here in Cranbury since we don't have trash taken out of our taxes and pay for the service as we need it. I actually own my own business and bring my trash from home to dump it their. This is a real savings for me.

If the new cranbury proposal goes through you will be paying for you waste removal even if you have a business or agricultural use with a dumpster. It sure will not be fair and the old timers that make one bag a week and share the waste disposal with their neighbor to minimize expenses will be burdened further by this additional tax!

There is no proposal at this point to do anything.

I was told by a TC member there is discussion on the upcoming agenda. It is whether to have a ballot question - Should the township look at the cost of contracting for trash collection for a flat fee (resident only)?

So if you disagree vote no and if you agree vote yes. I know I support looking at it to see if I can save money. But, others may not want to even look at it.

ballot question for trash? This is the first I am hearing of this. So Cranbury is going to go out and buy garbage trucks and hire people to pick up our trash? I sure do not like that idea.

NO NO NO, that's not the only way to do it. How bout a town wide negotiated contract, that something you do not have leverage to do with WM.

I disagree. Anonymous alarmist posts based on half-truths and exagerations are the reason many people think this site is a waste of bandwidth.

And I disagree, I don't think this site is a total waste. I think it actually serves a purpose in the community. You get to see what people really think about the issues of the day, and people write what they think or what they've heard. From there you can try to fix the problems, and sometimes get a good laugh along the way.

Right. And let's say Midco, WM or Jersey Central get scared that the town is going to make a contract for RESIDENTIAL pick up. Then one of them will be losing money. Don't you think we might see them lower our rates to try and convince residents to argue against the Town contracting for this service? I don't see a losing position.

It is should the town discuss this idea yes or no. Then see how the companies respond. Sometimes a threat such as this can lead to substantial savings. For example, I pay $180 a quarter now. Let's say the town can get me to $100 I save $80. Or let's say WM fears that they are offering 160 today and that the town may contract with another provider for less. They may come to me and say we'll give you $120 or $130 now in the hopes I'll then oppose town garbage collection.

I say it's always worthwhile having a discussion. So I support looking at it.

So I can then still use my current trash service under this plan? Or will I have to use who the town says I have to use?

The only question is should the town look at it. If the voters say yes, then the town looks at it. If there are substantial savings I would guess the town contracts. If voters say no on the ballott then I imagine the TC does nothing.

I would imagine if the town contracts you won't be able to use your provider. However, why would you if they cost more?
