We pay the township employees very handsomely. Most of us have to work on the days before a holiday and we accept that as part of our job. Next thing you know we will be paying bonuses for attendance ! As it is now, some [not all] employees have a pretty easy job and are able to hide in their little kingdoms without much supervision. There are a number of excellent citizen service oriented employees that are worth a bonus but they are not the rule just the exception. Its about time we get down to review who is working productively and weed out the slackers. Once that is done I'm all for early quitting time as a reward. |

Because the town council likes to waste time on things that are not important. |
The TC does not set the agenda the Mayor does.
In terms of the other poster's comments. Most employers including mine let us out early before some major holidays- Thanksgiving, Christmas, 4th, Labor Day and Memorial day. I have never worked for a company that did not do this.
If residents including myself say we need to follow private sector with the town employees then that should include everything from cost sharing on medical to early dismissal at certain times. |

I personally don't have a strong opinion about early closure before holidays for Township employees. But I do think your statements about the private sector are overstated. I have worked at many companies that don't do early closures before holidays. In fact, a majority of my employers haven't, including 2 Fortune 500 companies. My current one does, but that hasn't been my norm. I know a lot of people who don't get this. Can you provide any statistics to back-up your claim that "most" private companies do this?
And what is your point about "sharing" medical costs? I was under the impression that Township employees did have a medical plan. And I would be willing to bet it is as good or better than the Fortune 500 company I work for now. I pay thousands in up-front contributions to the base cost of my plan since the company only pays 58% of the plan costs, and that is for the basic PPO, the POS would cost me much more. And my co-pays are so high that I typically pay thousands more each year on top of that, for a family with no major medical conditions or events. I've been offered a public sector job and looked into it and the medical plan would have been better than my Fortune 500 company. |

What I am saying is that if we are going to try and make the twp employees pay and comp packages- raises, holidays, etc... modeled after the private sector then we need to do it all the way and not just cherry pick- make them contribute more on the medical plan and then not give them the holidays off.
I've worked for 8 companies in my entire employment history. I have yet to work for one that does not give half days before these holidays. Most of my friends (those who don't work for banks) all get the half days before the holidays I listed. It is not a half day before every holiday.
I know Mr. Taylor's background is in the HR consulting field so I am confident he has this information or access to it so I'll trust him on his recommendation. |

TC has no idea about much. Time for a complete change of elected officials. Trust the judgement of the Township Administrator. The decision should be made based on the circumstances at the time. |

Talk about a bad post and ignorance. If you read the paper, or attended the meeting most TC members said let the Twp Adminitstrator decide. So your logic would be to change the TC even though they agree with you. |

I think only one change needs to be made and it has taken care of itself. |

I don't see the relevance. I have seen the Township budget so I know make more than any Township employee. But I wasn't arguing against them getting early departures before holidays or their medical benefits. I was simply challenging the statements made by another poster that it is standard in "most" private companies. Two different things.
By the way, I'm not one of them but there certainly are plenty of people who work at my Fortune 500 company who don't make more than typical Township employees. I have a person in one of my departments with 26 years of tenure who makes $33,000 a year for a full time job in New York City. Before she was transferred to my department several years ago she was making $23,000. Her benefits are the same as mine which is to say okay but not great. She's the worst case example I know of because of her length of service but we have many employees making very low $30's. They often go 3+ years with no raises, as the company does not have automatic cost-of-living adjustments. Every year her benefits cost her more out-of-pocket because the company policy is to pass on all cost increases to employees. And she is an at-will employee with no job security. My point is it is not a given that “private sector” have better overall comp and benefits. In fact, I saw an article in the New York Times within the last month or so citing a study that shows there is now approximate parity between public and private sector pay. It didn’t used to be true but over the years public sector total compensation has risen much faster than private sector comp so they have closed the gap. Of course New York is full of ridiculously well compensated executives too, but they make up a very portion of the total work force. When you read about the “average” pay at Goldman Sachs you have to remember that the $20 million execs are skewing that average and they have $30-something jobs too.
Again, I have no issue with the comp or benefits of Cranbury employees. I only take issue with the generalistic assumptions about private vs public sector comp and benefits. |

Yeah, really. It must be nice working for a "Fortune 500" company. I am proud to say that I worked for 2 in the past and I know for a fact that the annual percentage increases were based on merit only and they were better than what I'm hearing Twp employees get (here and in other towns) |

Furthermore, I work for a "non" Fortune 500 now and can say that they take good care of our employees. I personally know someone who works for a municipality and it is not as "pretty" as some of you assume it is. |
