Has anyone heard anything about plans to build a free standing library next to the Little league field?

Fake post. Given the hundreds of posts about this and the articles in the Cranbury Press, no one would really be asking this as if it were a new topic.

The master plan has long had an option for a stand-alone library. When it was revised it still included the possibility next to the little league field. Some things in the master plan get built some never due. The current Township Committee majority has made it clear they wouldn't approve public money to build it and the Library is trying to raise money through private donations to do it instead.

Dont forget the 600k of tax surplus they have and are adding into each year with our tax $$$$$$$$$$

It's not all being privately donated.

Maybe they could give the tax money back as a refund?

That money is legally theirs. If they feel a stand alone library is important then it will be used to that purpose. I don't think a new library isn't any stretch a need, but many people do who are not on the board. So the chances are zero that they will stop the process and hand back the surplus.

The chances they raise all the money is also very low so I don't think people need to be worrying about it right now unless their only goal is to stir the pot. The time to worry is when a 4-person super majority fo the Township Committee has not declared their opposition to using bond money to help pay for it. Right now 3 of the 5 have declared they wouldn't do that. So has the current Republican candidate for Win's position. The Democratic candidate has not taken a position but even if she was elected it would still be short of the 4 person super majority needed to approve a new bond.

Hello -I am looking forward to answering any questions the people of Cranbury have about my position on this or any other issue of concern at tomorrow night's Candidate's night (8PM, Cranbury School). I have already researched this issue and have made my position on the free standing library clear since very early in my campaign. If we haven't met in person and chatted about this yet, I believe each of you will be receiving a letter from me in the next day or two with a clear statement about this and other concerns that have been brought to my attention while I have been campaigning for Township Committee. This is what my letter says about the issue:
Quote:
Library – A library can be a community treasure and I will personally contribute to its development. Nevertheless, as your TC rep, I can not support public funding of a new library as a component of our Township budget. I do, however, support the dedication of public land as identified in the Master Plan for the library’s construction I also thank the group committed to this aggressive fund raising and urge everyone to take the time to understand this effort.
I continue to welcome your questions and concerns about this and any other issue affecting your life in Cranbury. I invite you to visit my website (www.susangoetz.com) or contact me if you have any additional questions. Thank you for this opportunity to present my position. - Susan Goetz

Then either way the next TC will stil have at least 3 people opposed to public funding of a new library, where they require at least 4 in support. So no need for us to continue to get worked up about it here.

This entire thread is an attempt at stirring up the old misinformation campaign about the library. The Township is NOT going to pay for a new library. We all know this. The only tax money the library receives is required by state law. If you don't want a separate library that is a perfectly defensible position, please don't make up your own facts and drum up hysteria. The township has enough current problems on its plate, please don't fabricate any additional ones.

Thank you Susan. I appreciate you coming on this site in an attempt to put this issue to rest. I still don't understand why people are so confused about this.

I think there is a plan to do that. How to implement it is another issue.

I also think there is a large misunderstanding about how public libraries are run in New Jersey. While the TC and the Library Board work closely together, it is the Library Board that makes the decisions. If anyone has questions, they need to go to the Library Board meeting - they are public meetings - Second Thursday of each month in the library. That is the correct place and people to get answers to questions about the library.

You're splitting hairs over semantics. The point their were making is the state mandates minimum funding to the library and that's where that money comes from.

The town can't say howuch goes to the library. Once the residents pay taxes the money is legally theirs to use as they see fit. There is nothing we as tax payees can do. We are legally obligated to pay according to the state formula and the library is entitled to use it in their interest. So yes it's tax payer money, but legally owned by the library.
