Does anyone know what the Cranbury road department is working on by the bridge off of Old Cranbury rd? I see lots of vehicles but can not figure out what they are doing?

The discussed putting up fencing on Monday night due to beavers damaging the trees. Perhaps that is what you see.

Wont this fence also keep out wildlife that is in fact helpful to the area? It seems that if you fence out the fox or other natural predators, the rodent population may boom. How will the rabbits be able to get into the field to naturally graze? Will deer get tangled in this fence? I wonder how much thought went into this idea as far as the natural wildlife was concerned and is it all worth it just to save a few trees?

The fence is not on the whole property. It is on one side. It was stated that they spoke with the state division of wildlife and this was suggested as a way to deal with the beavers and not have to catch and remove them or harm other wild life. They only travel a certain distance and won't go around the fence. I don't know if it will work, but since the fence is paid by the grant and they are trying to do the best for all animals I am okay.

Ahhh. Ok. That makes sense. I do see a lot of trees that have been eaten now that I look back there. It only appears as though the damage is contained very close to the river. To the other poster, the deer will not be a problem, They can jump over 8 feet from a stand still. The rodents however, that would not be very good to have an abundance of them. Was the state office of Fish and Game notified about the problem before action was taken? I would hate to cause more problems for the sake of a few trees.

I only know what was said. So I assume if the state gave advice that they were also notified. I don't see rodent issues as the whole property is not fenced so fox and cats will still get in.

Isn't it true that beavers prefer some types of trees and not others? Why not plant the non favorite varieties along the waterway and do away with that eyesore of a fence??!!
